Man critically wounded in vehicle-to-vehicle shootout on W Orem Dr near Hwy 288; occupied home hit by gunfire

A man is in critical condition after he was shot while sitting in his car on West Orem Drive near Highway 288 around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Houston police. Investigators say someone in another vehicle fired into his car and hit him in the upper body. His girlfriend was in the car with him and was not hurt. While officers were still at the scene, a second shooting call came in about two blocks west. Police believe the two vehicles were firing at each other, and the gunfire hit a nearby home. People were inside the home, but no one there was injured. The shooter fled and rear-ended another car while getting away. The driver of that car was not hurt. Police say road rage is a possibility but are also checking whether an earlier dispute led the vehicles to follow each other. No description of the suspect or the suspect's vehicle has been released, and the shooter is still at large. HPD's Major Assaults Division is investigating.
